Kawhi Leonard Better Than Kevin Durant? Marquis Teague: KD Couldn't Lead Raptors to Title Alone

  Staff Reporter

As Kawhi Leonard returns to Toronto, the two-time Finals MVP's legacy has once again become a hot topic in basketball circles. Former NBA player Marquis Teague made a bold claim on a recent podcast, stating that Leonard should be ranked higher than Kevin Durant in historical terms, and bluntly asserted that if Leonard were replaced by Durant on the 2019 Raptors, Toronto would never have won the championship. The remarks have sparked a polarized debate among fans.

Appearing on the popular show "Club 520" hosted by his brother, former NBA All-Star point guard Jeff Teague, Marquis Teague compared the two elite wing players without hesitation. "For me, Kawhi is better than KD. I've never seen KD show the kind of dominance that Kawhi has in carrying an entire team," Teague said.

He further questioned the "championship weight," adding, "If you swapped Kawhi for KD on that Toronto team, there's no way they win the title. I respect KD — no disrespect — but that's how I see it."

The core of this sharp commentary lies in Leonard's epic 2019 playoff run, where he led the Raptors to their first championship in franchise history. During that postseason, Leonard displayed near-perfect two-way dominance, carrying a supporting cast of a rising Pascal Siakam and an aging Kyle Lowry to overcome powerhouse opponents. Combined with his earlier Finals MVP as a defensive stopper in San Antonio, both of Leonard's titles reflect high-level leadership.

In contrast, Durant's two championships and Finals MVPs came with the "73-win" Warriors, alongside Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson in a nearly unstoppable superteam. This has always cast doubt on the legitimacy of his titles. Notably, after Durant left, the Warriors won another championship, while Durant has struggled to replicate success with the Nets and Suns, frequently facing scrutiny over his ability to lead a team alone.

However, Durant's supporters argue that Teague's claim is "extremely unfair." In terms of career cumulative stats and consistency, Durant overwhelmingly outperforms Leonard. KD not only has an MVP award but recently surpassed Michael Jordan on the all-time scoring list to claim fourth place, with his historic scoring ability widely recognized.

In contrast, Leonard has been plagued by injuries in recent years with the Clippers, and his low game count has become a major blemish on his career. He has also been embroiled in controversy over a recent violation. As Leonard begins a new chapter in Toronto, the debate over who is the best small forward of the era will continue to intensify with the new season.
